IHSS FOR REGIONAL CENTER CLIENTS
Helping families understand IHSS, Regional Center support, and what comes next.
IHSS can help eligible people with disabilities remain safely at home. For Regional Center clients, IHSS is often an important public benefit that works alongside services like ILS, CFS, SDP, respite, and other person centered supports.
What is IHSS?
In Home Supportive Services is a California program that helps eligible aged, blind, and disabled individuals receive support at home instead of needing out of home care.
Why it matters
For people with autism, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, intellectual disability, and other developmental disabilities, IHSS can help with safety, daily care, personal needs, and remaining in the community.
IHSS and Regional Center
Regional Centers usually expect eligible clients to use available generic resources like IHSS before Regional Center funding is used for similar support needs.
WHAT FAMILIES ASK FIRST
Common IHSS support areas
IHSS hours are based on assessed need. Families should be ready to explain what support is needed, how often it is needed, and what happens if the person is left without help.
BTTR GUIDANCE
Where bttr can help
bttr Living does not replace the county IHSS office, but we can help families better understand support options, prepare for service planning conversations, coordinate with Regional Center teams, and build daily living supports around the person’s real needs.
Important reminder
IHSS is managed by the county. Regional Center services are managed through the person’s IPP. When both are involved, families should understand what each system covers so support is clear, ethical, and not duplicated.
