Why expressive skills matter

The ability to communicate clearly and with confidence is one of the biggest predictors of independence. Many adults with disabilities know exactly what they want but struggle to express needs, ask questions, or advocate for themselves in stressful situations. That gap creates frustration, isolation, and vulnerability.

When communication becomes consistent and confident, daily life becomes easier, safer, and more empowering across every area — home, community, work, and relationships.

  • Clearer communication at home and in the community
  • Safer decision making around relationships and personal boundaries
  • More independence at appointments, school, or work
  • Better understanding of rights and responsibilities
  • Reduced frustration, conflict, and misunderstanding

What bttr Express is

bttr Express is a coaching track focused on communication confidence and self-advocacy. It is not therapy or clinical speech services. It is real-life coaching built for the daily situations participants actually face — speaking up about needs, communicating with staff and family, preparing for appointments, and practicing boundaries in safe, structured ways.

Coaching is provided through ILS, as part of a CFS coordination plan, or as a customized track within the Self Determination Program, depending on your Individual Program Plan.

Core Express skills at bttr

Coaching focuses on real-life communication, not worksheets or generic scripts. Every skill is practiced in ways that match the participant's communication style, pace, and cultural context.

Speaking up

Expressing needs, preferences, and feelings clearly in real situations at home and in the community.

Self advocacy

Knowing your rights, asking questions, and using your voice confidently in meetings and appointments.

Emotional awareness

Understanding your own feelings and responding to difficult situations in a safe and grounded way.

Conversation skills

Starting conversations, staying on topic, listening actively, and asking good follow-up questions.

Practicing boundaries

Saying no clearly, recognizing pressure, and identifying situations that feel unsafe or uncomfortable.

Appointment confidence

Preparing questions and communicating clearly with doctors, therapists, employers, and other professionals.

Conflict resolution

Using respectful language and structured steps to work through disagreements without escalation.

Written communication

Practicing emails, messages, and phone calls with scripts and real-world follow-through.

What a typical week looks like

Expressive skills grow with repetition, real-life practice, and a safe environment to try new things. Each week is structured around simple, predictable routines that build confidence over time.

1

Check in and review

Start with a brief check-in about the week. Did a challenging situation come up? Something new to try? This shapes the session focus.

2

Practice the skill

Role play an upcoming conversation, practice a communication script, work on tone and pacing, or try a new way to express something that has been difficult.

3

Real world application

Many sessions move into the community to practice in real stores, offices, or appointments where the skill actually matters.

4

Reflect and document

End with a brief reflection on what worked. The coach documents progress toward IPP goals and notes what to build on next session.

Communication safety and personal boundaries

Safety is a major part of bttr Express. Coaching helps participants understand which situations are safe, which require firm boundaries, and when to ask for help.

Safety focus areas

Understanding healthy and unhealthy communication patterns
Recognizing manipulation, pressure, or conversations that feel wrong
Practicing how to say no clearly and respectfully in real situations

How to start with bttr Express

Express coaching can begin through Regional Center ILS or through the Self Determination Program. Here is what the path looks like.

2

If you are on SDP, include it in your spending plan

Work with your Independent Facilitator to include expressive coaching as a line item in your spending plan, tied to your IPP outcomes.

3

Connect with the bttr team

We discuss your communication style, goals, and what situations feel most challenging right now. We match coaching to your IPP and your life.

4

Start building

Coaching begins with small, real steps. Confidence builds with practice, patience, and a coach who is genuinely in your corner every session.
