ASL Training and Support is a regional center service that provides American Sign Language instruction and communication support for Deaf, Hard of Hearing, or DeafBlind adults with developmental disabilities, together with their families and support teams.
Who can receive ASL Training and Support with bttr.?
Deaf, Hard of Hearing, or DeafBlind adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities who are Regional Center of the East Bay clients in Alameda County. Families and support professionals can take part too.
Is this speech therapy or interpreting?
No. ASL Training and Support is language instruction and communication access, not speech therapy, interpreting, or a clinical service. The focus is expanding communication, not correcting the person.
Can family members and support professionals learn ASL too?
Yes. Sessions can include family members and support professionals so the people closest to the participant share a common language. They are included in training, never relied on to interpret.
Where is the pilot available?
The pilot is currently available to Regional Center of the East Bay clients living in Alameda County. Spaces are limited during the pilot phase.
What does a session look like?
Sessions begin in the person's language, include targeted ASL practice matched to their goals, and move into real situations at home and in the community, with family and support teams included when helpful.
Is the program grounded in Deaf culture?
Yes. The program is grounded in Deaf culture, visual communication, and respect for lived experience. Deafness is not something to fix; the goal is access.
How does it connect to the IPP?
Goals align with the participant's IPP for communication, self advocacy, and community participation. Goals and hours depend on the participant's desired outcomes and regional center approval.
How is ASL Training and Support funded?
ASL Training and Support is funded by your regional center when it is part of the participant's IPP.
